Masala Comedy Club’s (MCC) 9.0 version bests its own past efforts as they wrap up this season with a sold out show at Sunnyvale Theater this past weekend. The talented team of humorists take any and every situation and turn it into a funny story. Neha Goyal donned the MC hat and made it clear that the only agenda for the evening was to have a good time and hearty laughs!
Our first entertainer from Odisha, Akash Mohanty made a delightful impact. His thorough research into the world of different generations, specifically contrasting the Gen Zs from others brought many a topics and slangy vocabulary to light.. “vibe check”, “aura”, “manifesting”.. where real words take on a different meaning! Surprisingly, they still struggle in the corporate culture despite blatant confidence.
Aryan Gupta from Rajasthan put forth a good effort and connected with the audience over a slew of topics. These ranged from the trauma of having parents as roommates in childhood, to the fear of teachers at school especially during an oral test, and of the “sautela buddha” (oblique reference to the current leadership) while adulting in the US.
Neha Goyal, the veteran smile maker was truly in her element as she related her experience with the meaning of “swing”. Confused about a text message from a couple, she sets out to investigate what her husband had signed her up for, and was she prepared to go with the flow…er, swing. She also wove in a dig at Elon Musk’s “Department of Gaslighting Efficiency” (DOGE) and labeled the discrimination people face based on zip code in the Bay Area to “imposter swingdrome”!
From Chennai, we got to know the “diversity candidate” due to her ability to converse mainly in English, in this Hinglish show, although she is considered multilingual (codes in many languages), she took us to a somewhat dark side of life with her views on marriage, family relationships that end up needing therapy.
Ankit Bhardwaj entered the engineering college to learn to make “joints” only to be disappointed! He presented an interactive set from his “Mamta Model School” days and the trials and tribulations of girl-boy relationships learning the “Aww of Gravitation” when the girl puts you in the friend zone, while also being terrorized by the P.E teachers.
Akshata Athawale, a highly educated and accomplished addition to the crew brought refreshing humor with her take on the obsession with procreation. Beginning with the lack of true information on the process in school, where obscure language stands for these lessons, to freezing your egg phenomenon, which garners a “not as good as fresh” from relatives, had the crowd in splits.
Samay Jain, who debuted with MCC as a 14 year old has matured to legal drinking age and can bring the house down with his clever digs at older family members not sparing the mostly older audience on advice on his first breakup.
The last of the lineup, Ayush Shrivastava expanded on hiking as the most important techie skill in networking, and wondered when did walking become a hobby and its escalation to “hiking enthusiasts” in every team.
We await the next version of MCC as they continue bringing clean, relatable and outright funny content each time!
